# Claude went down twice in two days — 529s across Claude.ai, the API, and Claude Code

- Description: Two Claude outages in 24 hours and a third incident after; Kimi K3 runs at home at ~4 tok/s; GitHub Models dies today; Copilot review calls your own tools.
- Author: The New Way

Claude went down twice in two days — every model returning "529 Overloaded" across Claude.ai, the API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork: roughly three hours Wednesday evening, then almost five more this morning, with a third, smaller incident opened just after. Kimi K3's open weights are now actually running on home hardware — independent reports, real numbers, about 4 tokens a second. GitHub's free model playground, GitHub Models, shuts down for good today after a month of warnings. And GitHub's Copilot code review can now call a repo's own tools and pull live context from MCP servers. The daily pulse of AI coding tools — what shipped, what matters, what's next.

## When the tools go down

### Claude went down twice in two days — 529s across Claude.ai, the API, and Claude Code

Anthropic's status feed logged **two full outages in under 24 hours**: Wednesday 19:49–22:36 UTC (\~2h47m) and this morning 05:57–10:48 UTC — **\~4h51m, longer than the first** — both hitting the same four surfaces (claude.ai, the API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork), with every model returning `529 Overloaded` instead of finishing requests. A third, smaller incident — degraded Opus 4.8 performance — opened at 13:43 UTC and was still open as we published. Anthropic hasn't said what caused any of them. **If you were running a long Claude Code session either afternoon, you hit a dead session with no checkpoint — a different failure than a rate limit, and the thing every team's Slack was talking about.**

## The open-weights story grows hands

### Kimi K3 runs at home — first independent reports: \~4 tokens/sec on a 594GB build

Two days after Unsloth started publishing compressed builds of Kimi K3's open weights (1.56TB shrunk to **594GB**), r/LocalLLaMA's top threads are no longer the authors' — they're run reports: a home-lab setup pushing roughly **4 tokens/sec**, with hardware specs, quant choices, and failure modes in the comments. **The practical read: K3 at home is real but marginal — interactive-assistant speed, not coding-agent speed, and the floor is still a workstation, not a laptop.**

## Deadlines and defaults that moved

### GitHub Models — the free multi-model playground — shuts down for good today

The playground, model catalog, inference API, and bring-your-own-key endpoints all stop working today — the last step of a retirement GitHub announced July 1 and rehearsed with two scheduled brownouts (July 16 and 23). GitHub's advice: move model experimentation to Microsoft Foundry, and route AI workflows through Copilot instead. **If your team used GitHub Models to prototype against multiple providers without standing up separate cloud accounts, that path closes today.**

### Copilot code review can now call your team's own tools — agent skills and MCP go GA

Copilot code review can now invoke a repository's own `SKILL.md`\-defined tools (under `.github/skills`) and pull live context from MCP servers — issue trackers, docs, service catalogs — while reviewing a PR. Generally available as of yesterday for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise, and review comments now say when a skill or an MCP server produced them. **It's the same MCP that went stateless this week showing up as a concrete feature a day later: review comments built from your team's actual runbook instead of generic pattern-matching.**
